MAYAN RIVIERA
Tourist Guide
Playas
Between Punta Maroma and Punta Beté is a cold and crystalline fresh water river rises to the surface, leaving its subterranean home and rushes out to sea, where it combines with the salty water of the ocean and creates a small and unique ecosystem. On both sides of the bay, there are hotels of excellent quality.
XCALACOCO - Or "twin coconuts" is located south of Punta Bete. It is a great place for campers. Small restaurants serve seafood and there are public rest rooms. A small archeological site, rustic accommodations and solar electricity fill out the scene. The palm trees offer fresh shade during the day and Playa del Carmen is a mere 20 minutes drive away.
Paamul Caribbean Paradise, Riviera Maya Q. Roo México
PLAYA DEL SECRETO - Located just 30 miles south of Cancun is a deserted beach. Playa del Secreto means 'secret beach' in Spanish. And there is nothing before you but the sky and the sea. Just crystal clear water and a long stretch of beach with only a giant log to sit on. Aside from the birds, and the occasional person, traffic is minimal. It's harder these days to find that solitude, particularly during the peak of the tourist season. when the more popular beaches resemble Coney Island on a Sunday afternoon. Still, there are many remaining pockets of sand along the coast that haven't yet caught "Riviera Maya" fever.
The road leading to the beach has the feel of something that was planned ahead of its time. It's has two-lanes with palm trees down the middle, but everything has gone to seed and the jungle has taken over. You drive along
past jungle that quickly turns to mangroves, then onto the beach. Off to the left is a
small community of houses, including a bed and breakfast, don't stop there, turn right to
continue past the other rows of houses. The roads runs through the mangroves and eventually bends left. There are plenty of
birds in the trees making it a great place for some birding. The elusive Black-Necked
Stilt, a bird which tends to breed in the stumps of dead mangroves can sometimes be
spotted here. From here the beach is easy to find. Follow the sound of surf. Standing on the sand,
it's easy to get an idea of how beautiful this coast was before development. Off on the
horizon the sky, stretching endlessly, is dotted with clouds. It's a blessing there is
nothing else here. Nothing detracts from the beauty.
