I just got back from Capitan lafitte. We stayed in one of the duplex cabanas next to the water. It was my second visit. Saw turtle laying eggs on the beach and helped let some hatchlings go into the water. The location is great as the rooms are right on the beach. There were a few kids, not too many and not tons of people(I prefer that). Staff really goes out of their way to make you feel at home. Rooms are not fancy, but are clean and waterfrontand have their own hammocks. As far as amenities go, this is not a big all-inclusive, but that's not what I was looking for. Food is good and you can also eat at Kailuum next door. It met my needs perfectly and I'd go back again and probably will.
I stayed at El Dorado Resort in 1996. I prefer Capitan Lafitte. Lafitte location is good if you are renting a car as it's 5 miles to Playa del Carmen. Let me know if you have any other questions.
