My wife and I just returned from a two week stay at El Dorado R&S. This is the third year in a row that we have been there. It is important to remember that the resort is couples only and most of the folks are there to do as we do. Relax, sit on the beach all day and drink margaritas, and not be bothered. We experienced for the first couple of days several unhappy folks. Several couples were sent down from the Royal because they did not have rooms for them there. Also, due to that, folks that had booked a jacuzzi suite at the R&S arrived only to find that there was none available. They were quickly moved as they became open. The resort is very mexican in all aspects. The food is great (we think). Make reservations for the italian restaurant. We ate there quite often but you have to make reservations a day or two ahead, especially for the 7:30 seating. A couple days we got in on the 9:00 seating without a reservation. Some things to bring with you...Mesh beach shoes (the beach is coral sand and difficult to walk on) they sell them there but for $22.00 were you can get them at your local walmart for $5. A soft sided six pack cooler (about $5 from your local drug store) There are no ice machines like at most upright hotels. They will fill it for you at any bar. Good to keep with you on the beach or in your room as ice melts fast! Remember, there is no room service, so if you like to have a drink do what we do, bring a bottle of your favorite from home. The snorkling is really good. Try to go with the guide at 10:00 or 11:00 the first time, and then you will know where to go on your own. When you go on your own, go at high tide, the water is calmer then. Take the free tours included in your package, they are pretty good and they are free! Guaqamayas bar is open until 10:00. Meet Fransisco or the lady bartender Marisda. They will treat you well. The other bar is open until 1:00 am. We didn't spend much time there as it gets very loud and crazy late in the evening. Overall we love El Dorado R&S, and are making it our vacation getaway for several years to come. If you are into the wild and crazy life of sping breakers and 18 to 20 year old folks enjoying unrestricted drinking, stay in cancun! On a side note to all, if you are interested in buying a good bottle of tequila to bring home, wait until you get back to the airport. The duty free shop has an excellent selection for up to 25% less than you can find anywhere in Playa del Carmen. : : Thanks for any info : : Patty
