We stayed at Viva Maya in September, 1999. Hotel
was nice, but the air conditioner in our room was
the NOISIEST we've ever had anywhere, and didn't
work very well. We heard other guests complain
about the same thing. Room was adqeuate, although
not the least bit fancy; stark, in fact. Room was
kept clean and well-stocked by the maids. Most of
the rooms do not have an ocean view. We were on
ground level. No problem with bugs or critters
at all, but would have been nice to have some
kind of balcony to sit on, plus we could not
sleep with our patio door (or curtains!) open
for obvious reasons. Ask for a second floor
room. Food in the buffet restaurant was good
with lots of variety, and food at outdoor cafe
(near the pool) was also good. Food at fancy
seafood restaurant was AWFUL! Really wierd and
froo-froo stuff prepared by some snooty European
chef. NO choice or menu, either... you get what
he makes that day! Bar service was good, although
drinks often seemed a bit weak. Only beer in the
house was Dos Equis, not my favorite, but it was
free (!) so I drank it (often!). Beach area is
weak, with a terrace supported by sandbags. The
next hotel to the south is the Riu Palace (where
we are going this weekend!!!), which has a real
nice beach. Go there for swimming and laying
around in the sun. Entertainment at Viva Maya
was okay, not outstanding, but okay. Overall a
decent place that we would consider staying at
again, but only at a good price.
