: I haven't been on the board for a while and just saw your response to my dolphin story with the "dolphins in captivity" link. My dolphin story was about dolphins that were NOT in captivity.

I'm not trying to attack the people who want to swim with dolphins. I also did a dolphin dive experience in the Bahamas in 1992. Those dolphins were not exactly captive but more like addicted to the free grub. I am not sure what the situation is at Xcaret, but in Cozumel the dolphins are captive in a little shallow water pen. Saw it with my own eyes. I have said before that this is a bad situation for the dolphins and I stand by that.

(I sure hope this post isn't flame bait....)

Beyond that I am not trying to touch off border wars between the enviros and the desacrators. I realize that it is everyones dream to be in the water with dolphins. In my experience with wild dolphins they love to chase the boat and play in the wake, but when snorkelers enter the water they are gone. I can't tell you how many times I've jumped overboard to see the dolphins and they were gone.

This study was conducted in the ocean where these dolphins lived. They were free to come and observe the humans if they chose to, which they did.

How interesting. These animals are amazing.

The neat thing about the story was they freely chose to join the syncronized swimmers. The point I was trying to make is they are far too intelligent to be held in captivity for people to swim with.

Yes I agree. It is too sad for these captive dolphins.

If people want to swim with dolphins they should go to the dolphins turf(or surf) and see if "they" want to swim with the humans.

Which in my experience they usually do not, but hey, their choice. I wonder how much creedence to give Elian's story that the dolphins saved him by keeping sharks away and supporting him when he was tired.
