Alas, there is no bus from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen. Your best bet is to find other people on your flight who are also going to Playa and then share taxi fare with them. If that isn't possible you can try the following:

On the edge of the airport public parking lot facing the Thrifty drop-off point, is a bus station. It consists of a motor home without wheels with a blue canopy attached. Under the canopy are a couple wooden benches. They have buses into Cancun(el centro)for 40 pesos each. The buses run every 15 minutes from 6am to midnight. From the downtown bus station you can get anywhere in Mexico, including Playa del Carmen. You never have to wait long for the next bus.

For your return trip to the airport, your best bet is to catch one of the transports advertised on 5th Avenue. They run $10-$13USD each. A taxi will cost about $35.00USD.
