We did that drive at night before but we where allready familiar with the area and the road. We actually drive at night all the time now since the Hwy. was turned into 4 lanes but we are from Europe and used to small dark country roads. Everything went fine but if this is your first time I think it could be very stressful for you. It will probably take about an 1 1/2 hours at the airport getting your luggage and the car.
Maybe you can stay 1 night in Cancun have a nice dinner and drive to Akumal the next morning.
