                     Isla Holbox

Town's main entrance to the beach

Isla Holbox is situated on the northern tip of the Yucatan Penninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo. It is 43 kilometers long, and only 500 feet wide. The spaniards found the island deserted in their 16th century arrival. It is protected by the reserve Yum Balam, with restrictions of the reserve. Here you will find over 140 species of birds such as white ibis, pink flamingos, pink garcets, and white and gray pelicans to name a few. In the lagoon, it is common to see dolphins, rays and crocodiles.

To arrive to the island, you take hishway 180 to Merida to Ignacio Zaragoza, Km. 80, and turn right to Chiquila, a small quiet fishing village located in the middle of mangrove. Here you will take the small ferry boat across the Lagoon Yalahau to Isla Holbox, arriving on
on the lagon side, where you will see many birds, crododiles, dolphins, turtles, as well as over 100 species of fish, who hatch their eggs in the lagoon.

Isla Holbox main attractions are of course its peacefulness,  35 kilometers of white sand beach,(La Ensenada Beach) and the friendliest people in the mexican caribbean. You are taking a walk back in time to a gentler place, where children played on the street, everyone knows your name, and everyone cares about their island and their future, together.

Some main attractions besides the above are the isla pasion (passion island), isla pajaros (bird island), ojo de agua (water eye), where you will find a bubbling fountain of fresh water said to energize everyone. Mystics beleive Isla Holbox is situated under an energy vortex, erasing worries and stress, while giving you a new thirst for life

The town lives off fishing at the moment, working within the cooperative set up for them. Ecotours are becoming the other mainstay at Isla Holbox, with dolphin and bird watching very popular. Fly fishing is great in the lagoon as well.
